Pakistan withdraws from Chess Olympiad 2022, objects to torch relay through Kashmir

Pakistan withdraws: On Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the Chess Olympiad 2022 in Chennai.

The 44th Chess Olympiad, which is set to begin in Chennai on Thursday, has been abandoned by Pakistan. Asim Iftikhar, a spokeswoman for Pakistan’s foreign office, said in a statement to Radio Pakistan that India “chose to politicize this famous international athletic event” by using the torch relay through Kashmir on July 21 as justification for its withdrawal.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) invited Pakistan to take part in the Chess Olympiad, he added. For this competition, a Pakistani contingent had already begun training.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, responded to Pakistan’s decision by saying it was unexpected that Pakistan had decided at such a last minute not to participate in the event.

He stated in New Delhi that it was “deplorable” that Pakistan had politicized the famous international tournament by making such claims and canceling its participation after its team had already arrived in India.

Pakistan has pulled out of the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India, claiming that the hosts are attempting to “politicize” the competition.

The reason for the withdrawal was the Torch Relay’s passage through Kashmir on July 21.

Asim Iftikhar, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s foreign ministry, said the following to Radio Pakistan: “This important international athletic event was politicized by India.

“The International Chess Federation (FIDE) invited Pakistan to participate in the Chess Olympiad.

“A contingent from Pakistan was already preparing for this event.”

Arindam Bagchi, a spokeswoman for India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), responded to the announcement by describing Pakistan’s choice as “surprising.”

Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Union Territories “have been, are, and will be an essential part of India,” according to Bagchi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially open the Olympiad in Chennai on Thursday while India is hosting the major event for the first time.

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, Chief Minister M K Stalin, and Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur, among others, will be present during the opening ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium in the city.

The sporting event will be held near Mamallapuram, about 50 km from Chennai.
